ThanksGiving

It’s Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada and I am relaxing today after spending the last two days in the kitchen preparing, cooking, tasting and shooing hungry, just-want-to-know-what-smells-so-good teens out of my way.
To her credit though, Daughter (14) did help with the apple crisps and she finally learned how to make the yummy crumbly topping…a secret [...]

Valentine’s Tea Party

This weekend Daughter and I are having a Valentine’s Tea Party.   It’s really just an excuse to hang out with our best friends, have some tea and sweets and do some crafts.
The great thing about doing this kind of activity with older kids is that I only have to do half the work.  The [...]

I know it’s earlier than last year but with the snow and the -30 C temperatures, I could really use it about now.
I’m too lazy to hunt around for last year’s meme and besides, I don’t want to do the exact same one anyway.  If you want to play, please feel free to copy and [...]

Cheesecake

That, my friends, is a pic of my first ever cheesecake!  Nice eh?
It was so easy and so good that I can’t believe that I’ve never made one before.  Here’s the recipe.
Preheat oven to 350 F.
Ingredients:
For the crust:
1 1/2 cups of graham crumbs
1/4 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of butter (melted)
Mix ingredients together thoroughly and press [...]

Go to (remember BASIC anyone…yes, I am that old) end of post for the update.
********
I’m not one to toot my own horn, too loudly, but I like to think that in my 20 years of cooking for a family that I’ve gained some skills in the kitchen.  Ah, to heck with it, the fact is [...]

One of the presents Hubby got me for Christmas this year is a recipe book.  Not a cook book, but a book where I can record and otherwise keep my own and my favourite recipes.  See, see…that’s it there.

Along with blank pages to write in my own recipes, it has these neat folders to hold [...]

Throwing A Cookie Party

A few (ahem…we’ll just say that) years ago, I threw my first cookie party.  At first, it was just a ploy to ease my holiday baking workload and take advantage of some free child labour.  But it worked out so well, for all involved, that I’ve turned it into a tradition.
The deal is that you [...]

To Die For Lasagna

Last night I made Hubby’s favourite meal (of mine – his mother’s borscht is still his all time fav). Between all the “Mmmmm”s and “Oh my god this is good”s around the table, I got quite the ego boost.
I don’t make it often because frankly, it takes 2 days to make it properly* [...]

Buried In Brine

Okay, I promise, this is my last post about pickles.
It’s just that when you’re up to your armpits in something you weren’t really expecting it can dominate your thoughts.
Well, I can officially confirm that the recipe from my last post, although a little too heavy on the vinegar, didn’t kill anyone nor did it make [...]

In a Pickle 2

You know, making pickles was more fun than I thought it would be.  I might just make a farmer’s wife out of myself yet.
Of course, I’ll have to divorce Hubby and marry a farmer because as far as I can tell, despite how supportive he’s been, he isn’t about to trade in his pocket protector [...]
