A joining of two people in matrimony.
A joyous and celebratory occasion.
A great reason to get dressed up…and be reminded of just how good Hubby looks in a suit and tie.
A reconnecting with old friends and an opportunity to make new ones.
A chance to eat great food on someone else’s dime.
But mostly, weddings are a realization [...]

My Son Turns 21
Posted in My Opinion, Parenting, Women's Issues on September 6, 2009 | 4 Comments »
On Tuesday Son turns 21.
I’m 37 (and don’t turn 38 until late November).
Funny how that even as little as 100 years ago that would have been nothing out of the ordinary. Big deal.
For centuries young women, girls by our standards, have been married off and birthing children as soon as they were “old” enough to, [...]
I’ve Said It Before…

…and I’ll say it again and again, LUCK has nothing to do with it.
Please, for the love of God, when you see me with my well behaved children (or Hubby for that matter), when you see my newly renovated bathroom, when I tell you about a new sewing project I have the time to work [...]
And Now For Something Completely Adorable

When preparing for our “didn’t go because of the rain” SCA campout two weeks ago, Daughter wanted to know if she could bring “James” (named after James Bond), her beloved stuffed bear.
“Of course” I said, “but he will need garb like everyone else. A tuxedo is definetly not period.”
Yes, she has a stuffed bear [...]
An Open Letter to New Mommies

If you’re the kind of New Mommy who gets all giddy with glee when a stranger smiles and coos at your child, then you can disregard the following.
Also, those New Mommies who look gratefully and approvingly at a stranger who offers to hold one child while she maneuvers another and her groceries, can consider themselves [...]
Wasn’t Willing To Wait Around

The following is part of a speech recently given by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. (Thanks to Stephen at Amazed and Bemused who posted it in full.) It’s a formal apology to the people who suffered at the hands of the Indian Residential School system.
“We now recognize that, in separating children from their [...]
She’s Happier

NOTE: I just realized this post would make a good conclusion to my “Why We Really Started Homeschooling Series” so that’s what it is, even though it’s not labeled as such.
In the 18 months we’ve been homeschooling a lot has happened. In many ways it’s hard to wrap my mind around because it often feels [...]
Experience Doesn’t Count Anymore
Posted in My Opinion, Parenting on April 8, 2008 | 3 Comments »
I recently got blasted in the comments section of a blog I frequent. It seems I had the audacity to offer practical (asked for) advice regarding parenting that contradicted, and apparently insulted, someone else’s ideals.
Without getting into the issue specifically, let’s just say I offered an experienced opinion while the offended party was basing their [...]
Making A Difference

From the Ottawa Citizen on Earth Hour:
(Note: The original article is quite lengthy and I’m commenting to merely the first half of it.)
“Mr. Silk is the general manager of Envirocentre, a non-profit agency that works out of city hall to increase energy efficiency throughout Ottawa. Although the city’s officially on board, Mr. Silk won’t be [...]
Failing to Socialize?
Posted in Homeschool, My Opinion on March 10, 2008 | 3 Comments »
When I started homeschooling my 12 year old daughter just over a year ago, the first question I was asked was, “What about socializing?”
What I think the person asking really wanted to know was, ‘Aren’t you worried your daughter will grow up weird and unable to function in normal social situations?’
And certainly I’m not implying [...]
