Just thought I’d relay this freaky experience for those of you who use Facebook.
This morning I was surfing…okay, I was checking out a celebrity gossip site…when a banner ad got my attention. It was an ad for a Facebook application and I was gobsmacked to see Son’s Facebook profile pic.
I was stunned…like being stung by a wasp. My brain had to take and retake the information in. That was my Son and his picture was being used to advertise a Facebook application.
Without his knowledge, without his consent and certainly without compensation.
But we all read the legal jargon that goes along with signing up for these things, right? We all know that they have the right to let someone else use our images for profit even if they promise they won’t.
Still, it’s not until it hits so close to home that you realize just how slippery their privacy policy actually is.
For his part, Son was very “meh” about the whole thing. “That’s cool” was the only thing he said when I showed him the banner ad with his pic on it.
Okay…so if he doesn’t care, should I?
I’m sorry, but that IS freaky!!! Makes me want to go & remove any 3rd party application that I am using.
Wow!
I get that they CAN do it, but the fact that they DO do it sucks.
Cate – Yeah, it really did put me on the defensive and made me very glad that I don’t spend more time on Facebook.
Shady – Exactly. It seems like we’re all okay with the fact that they can, it’s when they actually do that it throws us for a loop. Like I said though, Son didn’t seem all that concerned.
