Me: Okay, this paneling has got to go.
Hubby: I thought you were just painting over it?
Me: No, I’m painting (points to adjoining wall on the right) over that paneling.
Yes folks, one of the smallest rooms in the house, that gets the least amount of light, has paneling on two walls. But not matching paneling…no, that would be too easy.
We’ve got two adjoning walls of paneling that are totally different in colour, texture and finish. Over the fireplace we assume the paneling (the house was built in 1968) is original but we’re absolutely positive that the (only) previous owner put up the cheap looking stuff to the left…well, WE certainly didn’t do it.
Anyway, to ensure that I didn’t lose my nerve and before Hubby could change his mind when he said, “Of course Dear, I think that’s a wonderful idea!” (Okay, what he actually said was, “I’m so done arguing with you about this, just do what you want!”)
I did this:
Aha! I knew it…there’s a wall under them thar disgusting 1970’s paneling.
At best the glue will come off (so far it just peels away) with little damage to the underlying wall, at worst we’re looking at a weekend project to replace the drywall and repaint.
Either way, it’s a step up.

We?
I thought *you* wanted to take the panelling down

(kidding)
And if you had peeled it off and found nothing but studs, it would have still been far better to add drywall than to paint paneling. I have experience with both. Replacing the drywall is FAR easier than painting (well) the ugly paneling.
Congrats on your discovery. Enjoy your new walls!
Chris – But of course, the Royal We dontcha know.
NotJune – Hiya, seen you (well your comments) around the blogosphere…thanks for visiting and commenting.
And truth…if I had found studs, I would have tried to convince Hubby to open up the room…secretly I’m hoping the glue does ruin the drywall…hehehe.
